 The National Trade Union Centre (NTUC) condemns the move by the government to suppress the token strike carried out by university teachers to demand the government to fulfill very justifiable demands they had presented to the government and which the government had, on several occasions, promised to fulfill.

Addressing a media briefing at the UNP media unit yesterday (28), UNP Gen. Secretary Tissa Attanayake said, the Rajapakse Govt.’s favorite preoccupation is breaking promises.

The President himself promised at the Presidential elections that public servants’ salaries will be increased by Rs. 2500/- per month in January 2010. That promise was not fulfilled. The President and Basil Rajapakse promised to the University professors Association on 31st January 2008 to increase the monthly salaries of the Professors. That promise also evaporated into thin air. The Govt. also promised to give a 25% to 50% education allowance until the salary increases are given. That too was not honored. Then it promised to grant a 20% additional interest to the fixed deposits of the senior citizens over 60 years. That promise too has been broken from the 30th of June, Attanayake pointed out.

Mervyn 'bans' dengue

 Deputy Minister of Highways Mervyn Silva said he would not let any dengue deaths occur in Kelaniya after August 1st and if a death does occur, officials of the relevant authorities will be tied to a tree as punishment.

Speaking at a media briefing Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva said that he would take measures to tie the members of the Pradeshiya sabha, health officials, grama niladari officials and samurdhi officials to a tree located close to the dengue victim’s house.

Govt. responds to academicians’ strike – Deducts a day’s pay!

The government, instead of resolving the issue that led to a token strike carried out by more than 4000 university teachers in universities throughout the island, has taken measures to cut a day’s wages from the university academics who took part in the token strike. This has been informed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to vice- chancellors of all universities by circular.

Corruption index places Lanka 97th out of 180 Private sector a major source of corruption

Sri Lanka is ranked 97th out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s Global Corruption Report for 2009. The island’s private sector has been indentified as a major source of corruption while land deals for tourism development projects are not transparent and corrupt deals go through in the name of defence, officials say.

Lankans arrested in US

Palm Beach police in the US turned over six men from Sri Lanka to the U.S. Border Patrol today after noticing them walking down the street in wet pants, police said.

According to spokesman Sgt. Curtis Krauel, a patrol officer noticed the men at 6:40 a.m. (Tuesday) heading south at County Road near Seminole Avenue.

Sri Lanka has not paid for some acquired land for 25-years: official

- Sri Lanka has not paid some owners of land acquired by the state for infrastructure for 25-years, and a total of 8.5 billion rupees remains unpaid for property taken to expand roads, an official said. "To my shock and amazement I found that some people have not been paid for years," Sri Lanka's road secretary Wasantha Karannagoda, a former Navy chief said.

"About 42,000 families who have given up their land for the benefit of the country have not been paid. The oldest is about 25 years."

Singh to send envoy

 India is deputing a senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs to Sri Lanka to assess the progress of restoration of normal life in Tamil-dominated northern and eastern parts of the island at the end of the war against LTTE.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh has conveyed this in a letter to Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi who had recently urged him to send a special envoy to assess the "real situation" in the Tamil areas.

Man ablaze near Sirikotha

 A man identified as Rienzi Algama, set himself ablaze opposite the UNP headquarters Sirikotha today and was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital with serious burn injuries. He was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.

  UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya confirmed that Algama was a UNP supporter and had been ‘disgusted’ over the ‘disunity’ of the UNP and had stressed the need of unity within the party.

'Govt. controlled by international rulers'

July 26, 2010: This government is controlled by companies, American, Indian, international and Israeli rulers, says Dr. Wickremabahu Karunaratne, party leader of the Left Front.

Dr. Karunaratne was addressing a media briefing convened by the Palestine - Sri Lanka Friendship Society in Colombo yesterday on a statement alleged to have been made by the Sri Lankan ambassador to Israel, Air Chief Marshall Donald Perera,  during an interview to a newspaper.

“This proves where our government stands today. There is no need for  doubt. The truth is that this government is purely controlled by Companies, International, American, Indian rulers, and rulers of Israel.

“These actions are designed to achieve their own ends by tricking the Muslim community and the poor community of Sri Lanka and the international community too. Therefore, we must strongly object to this,” said Dr. Karunaratne.
