Organized rallying of women a must and a source of strength - Ranil says PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 March 2010
In a  special message issued yesterday (07) by Ranil Wickremesinghe ,on account of the Universal women’s day which falls today (08)  , , the Leader of the  Opposition and the UNP said , , organized rallying of women will be a source of strength  for the citizens of the country in the building  of a free and just society..
Violation of human rights , decadence of the social fabric , high cost of living had taken toll of the women’s happiness and welfare . These factors have militated against the maintenance of the status of women in Sri Lanka society, though such status is paramount in the best interests of all.

Mr. Wickremesinghe recalled , how the Universal women’s day came into existence .  It was Clare Zetkin , a German socialist activist in 1910, who submitted a proposal to the Second Int. Conference of  working women that every year in every country there shall be a celebration of a women’s day in order that they can press for their own demands.
