Tuesday, 27 July 2010
A man identified as Rienzi Algama, set himself ablaze opposite the UNP headquarters Sirikotha today and was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital with serious burn injuries. He was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya confirmed that Algama was a UNP supporter and had been ‘disgusted’ over the ‘disunity’ of the UNP and had stressed the need of unity within the party.

Jayasuriya said, “The supporter contacted me this morning. He remained thoroughly disappointed about the absence of unity in the party. He always spoke about the need to unite. I think he set himself ablaze because if this disappointment.”

Algama is a relative of the late General Lucky Algama and hails from Kelaniya. He had joined the UNP during the Late President J.R Jayawardene era of the 1980’s

We were not allowed time to take Legal action against constitutional amendments –Ranil UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing a media briefing at the Sri Kotha on the 1st, said the party was more ready to take political measures rather than legal against the Govt.’s proposed constitutional amendments.

Mr. Wickremesinghe gave this above answer in reply to a question posed by the media whether the UNP is taking legal measures against the constitutional amendments of the Govt. He also added that, as the proposed amendments in writing were received by the party only on Sunday last, there was hardly any time for the party’s legal Council to make an evaluation thereon.
