Govt. responds to academicians’ strike – Deducts a day’s pay! PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 July 2010
The government, instead of resolving the issue that led to a token strike carried out by more than 4000 university teachers in universities throughout the island, has taken measures to cut a day’s wages from the university academics who took part in the token strike. This has been informed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to vice- chancellors of all universities by circular.

Instructions have been given by the circular to deduct a day from any remaining leave from those who took part in the token strike and if anyone had exhausted all his or her leave to consider no pay leave for yesterday. This circular was issued yesterday (27th) by the Chairman of the UGC Prof. Gamini Samaranayake.

The university academics launched the token strike yesterday demanding the government to grant 25% increase to their salaries which was one of the 14 promises the government had given them during the presidential and general elections. The academicians pointed out that the government, despite accepting all their demands were justifiable, did not take any measures to grant them. The University Teachers' Alliance states they would give government time till 10th August to grant their demands. If the governed fails to do so, all university academicians would resign from their posts emphasized University Teachers' Alliance.

We were not allowed time to take Legal action against constitutional amendments –Ranil UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing a media briefing at the Sri Kotha on the 1st, said the party was more ready to take political measures rather than legal against the Govt.’s proposed constitutional amendments.

Mr. Wickremesinghe gave this above answer in reply to a question posed by the media whether the UNP is taking legal measures against the constitutional amendments of the Govt. He also added that, as the proposed amendments in writing were received by the party only on Sunday last, there was hardly any time for the party’s legal Council to make an evaluation thereon.
