The President had stated at the Temple Trees yesterday, the knowledge of the intelligentsia must be imparted on behalf of the country. The President made a similar request to the professionals when the war ended. While he is making such requests on the one hand, he is on the other hand creating an environment today for the intellectuals of the country - the Professors to take to the streets in protest to increase their salaries, he observed. The Minister for Higher education S B Dissanayake admitted that the University lecturers ought to be given a higher salary. But, when the Professors staged a one day token strike yesterday, the University Grants Commission had decided to cut a day’s pay of those who participated in the strike. Is it by these kinds of false promises and obnoxious policies the President going to make this country an Asian model, he is crowing about? Attanayake asked.Referring to Naamal Rajapakse‘s letter to his father, the President to appoint a Commission to investigate the killing of the Ruhunu University student, he said ,nothing can be more ridiculous than this, for this is something that could have been done at home between the son and father. All these clownish acts are to somehow mislead the investigations. No matter what father and son are trying to do between them regardless, all we want is an impartial inquiry and punishment meted out duly, he pinpointed.
