 Immigration Dept. Trade Union would take legal action against a cabinet decision to re-recruit one hundred unskilled employees as staff grade officers, union Officials said yesterday.

“These jobs have been given over to officers who may not have the skills required to do our work.

They have already been given the uniforms that are worn by us. I have never seen a situation where a group of employees of a particular level undertake the work of another group of employees who provide different services in a particular department.

STF illegally arrest, detain and file fabricated charges against German philanthropist

A German philanthropist staying in Sri Lanka has been illegally arrested and detained by the officers attached to the Special Task Force (STF) of the Sri Lanka police on 17th August, 2010 at Siyambalanduwa. He was travelling with his son and his companions in the district of Monaragala. He was detained in the Siyambalanduwa Police Station where fabricated charges of illegal drug trafficking were filed against him. A few months before this incident a powerful Minister of the present Sri Lankan government illegally requested Mr. Michael Kreitmeir to give him Rs. 30 million towards his election campaign and when Mr. Kreitmeir refused he was threatened by the Minister. A report on this specific incident was sent to the German Embassy on 13 March 2010 by the victim

Sri Lankan tourist killed fleeing Malaysian kidnappers

KUALA LUMPUR, August 31, 2010 (AFP) - A Sri Lankan tourist died fleeing kidnappers in Malaysia while a friend escaped and another was rescued by police, the force said Tuesday.
The three had just arrived on holiday and to sell gemstones worth 40,000 ringgit (12,736 dollars) when they were abducted last week at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, district police chief Abdul Rahim Abdullah said.

"The three were trying to get a cheap ride to the city but were instead led into a van and kidnapped by four people and taken to a flat in the suburbs," he told AFP.

Go for referendum

 The main opposition UNP today urged the government to hold a referendum on the proposed constitutional amendments. The amendments which have been approved by the cabinet will be presented to Parliament next week.

While expressing the party's total dissatisfaction on these proposals, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told reporters today that the UPFA did not seek a mandate at the last Parliamentary election to introduce such "draconian" constitutional reforms.

Sri Lanka cabinet backs constitution change for president

August 30, 2010 (AFP) - Sri Lanka's cabinet on Monday backed changing the constitution to allow President Mahinda Rajapakse to run for office for a third term, opening the way for a vote in parliament.
Rajapakse, who oversaw the defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels last year after decades of civil war, has a firm grip on power and has been criticised for crushing dissent and opposition media.

The cabinet approved a proposal to remove the two-term limit for presidents, which would mean Rajapakse could stand again when elections are scheduled in November 2016.

Death of former Minister Lakshman Jayakody

 Former Minister Lakshman Jayakody passed away at the General Hospital, Colombo after a brief illness, yesterday (Aug 30). He was 80.

Born on August 24,1930, Lakshman Jayakody was serving as a Senior Presidential Advisor to President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He was a Cabinet Minister of Buddhist Affairs from 1994 -2004.

He was a Sri Lanka Freedom Party stalwart and was educated at Trinity College, Kandy and Ananda College, Colombo.

SANGA’S CHOICE OF OPENERS UPSETS JAYASURIYA: REPORT

 Sanath Jayasuriya questioned the wisdom of Kumar Sangakkara making his choice of batting line-up for the World Cup public, saying as skipper, Sangakkara should be more responsible about the statements he made.

You can have your opinions as an individual, but when you are in a position of responsibility, you must be careful of what you say in public,” the most capped one-day player in the history of the game told Deccan Herald.Sangakkara’s preferred line-up does not include Jayasuriya, the current captain plumping instead for younger guys like Dinesh Chandimal and Jeevan Mendis who are not in the squad for the tri-series under way.
“I am not disappointed, it’s just an individual making a statement,” the 41-year-old Jayasuriya reiterated.

President in a hurry to get amendments that allows more than 2 tenures passed

 The President has planned to present to the cabinet the proposed amendment to the constitution on the 30th and then get it passed at the very next Parliamentary session as an urgent bill. According to internal sources of the government the amendment includes clauses to increase the number of times a person could hold the office of presidentship and to fully implement the 13th amendment.
 
Also, these sources say that the President has ordered ministers and Parliamentarians of the government not to leave the country until the 15th of next month.
