Bedi urges ‘shameful’ Delhi Commonwealth Games boycott

Former Indian cricket captain Bishen Bedi has urged athletes to boycott the Commonwealth Games in protest against the shameful incompetence and corruption of Games officials.Bedi, one of India’s most famous former sportsmen, is embarrassed by the performance of his home city in constructing venues, which are months behind schedule and have little or no chance to be completed by the October 3 opening ceremony. Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Hooper has asked the Delhi organising committee to update him on safety standards and wants a report from agencies involved within the next two days. “It is an absolute embarrassment,” Bedi told The Courier-Mail from New Delhi yesterday. “The Games are completely in the doghouse. I am yet to be convinced they will happen because there are so many things that won’t be done.

Canada takes hard line on Tamil migrants

VANCOUVER, August 17, 2010 (AFP) - A Canadian tribunal on Tuesday ordered continued detention for the first person interviewed in a group of 492 Tamil asylum seekers that reached Vancouver last week aboard a battered cargo ship. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, citing sovereignty, "significant security concerns" and "increasing" human smuggling for financial gain, said that authorities will screen each of the migrants individually. "It's a fundamental exercise of sovereignty and we're responsible for the security of our borders and the ability to welcome people or not welcome people when they come," Harper told reporters.

The Dragon Fruit which is available in Sri Lanka can control cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure, Agriculture Department Programing Assistant Sudarshani Perera said.She said since Dragon Fruit is not sweet, a majority refuse to eat it and are not aware about its nutritious value. The Dragon Fruit was introduced newly to Sri Lankan farmers and they are very keen on cultivating it.Earlier Dragon Fruit was cultivated only in home gardens as the price of seedlings were high. UNP emphasizes need for broad political alliance

The UNP yesterday (16) said there is a need for a broad alliance to fight against the anti-democratic actions of the government.UNP Spokesperson and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathileka told The Sunday Leader that the party is ready to assist such an alliance. Karunathileka said the party is even ready to assist such an alliance as proposed by the JVP and form a broad alliance together, as the UNP was already in the process of forming an alliance to restore democracy in the country and fight for what is right.

Celebrates 80th birthday with 80 grandchildren and great grandchildren

August 16, 2010: A great grandmother of Ja-Ela celebrated her 80th birthday in the company of all her children including 80 grandchildren and great grandchildren yesterday. Mary Lilian Gunasekera was born on August 15, 1921 and has 16 children. A special feature of the birthday celebrations was that over 100 of her family members numbering 112 were present to wish their beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother happiness and long life.

Hambantota district MP Sajith Premadasa says he is ready to have discussions with UNP leader

Hambantota district MP Sajith Premadasa says he is ready to have discussions with UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and is not looking for a position but instead wants to create democracy within the party. The parliamentarian said this while addressing the Matale and Polonnaruwa party activists. He also said that although he has been informed about a discussion with the party leader he has not been notified of a date or a time and that he will work for the party.

G.S.P + ends yesterday- Sri Lanka loses Rs. 570 billion annually

G.S.P plus concession will come to an end from today. Accordingly it is calculated that Sri Lanka will lose US$500 million or Rs.570 billion per year. This loss is as higher as 12% of total garment exports of Sri Lanka. Under this circumstances it is estimated that the revenue of garment export which was US$3.6 billion or Rs.376 billion last year will decline to 2.7 or 2.8 billion dollars. Consequently over last 14 months 40000 garment employees have been evicted from their employments garment employees' trade unions announced. After the withdrawal of G.S.P concession this condition will further deteriorate trade unions further clarify.

Sri Lanka war hero's party to appeal conviction

Sri Lanka's former army chief Sarath Fonseka will appeal against a court martial conviction that stripped him of his rank, pension and prestige, his political party announced Sunday. President Mahinda Rajapakse formally removed Fonseka's rank and medals and stopped his pension on Saturday, a day after a court martial found him guilty of engaging in politics while in uniform. "We do not accept the court martial process, but we are going to appeal to a civilian court against this decision," said Anura Kumara Dissanayake, legislator and spokesman for Fonseka's Democratic National Alliance.

JVP Demonstration Reaches Parliament
