North Central Province UNP chief ministerial candidate, Janaka Perera said yesterday he did not accept the election results as genuine or that the election was conducted in a free and fair manner.

He charged that there was violence, thuggery, intimidation and arson attacks against the UNP in the entire district even on election day.

Champions Trophy postponed by ICC

 The International Cricket Council has postponed next month's Champions Trophy until October 2009.

 

The eight-team tournament was scheduled to take place in Pakistan from 12-28 September, but South Africa had already pulled out because of security worries.

And England, Australia and New Zealand had also expressed doubts about playing in Pakistan at the present time.

ICC president David Morgan said there was "complete support and sympathy" for the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Pakistan is currently fighting Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in the northwestern tribal regions bordering Afghanistan and has suffered a string of deadly suicide bomb attacks in the last year, which have killed more than 1,000 people

We challenge Govt. to hold Gen. Election - Tissa

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake addressing a press conference today stated that compared to the 2004 Provincial Council elections the UNP vote base has increased while the Government vote base has decresed. "We challenge the govt to hold a general election instead of PC polls" he added.

Seven licence holders to be given access

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is gearing up to allow for the Lanka Marine Services Limited (LMSL) to be used for bunkering by seven licence holders.

This is expected to benefit the industry and reduce the cost of bunkers in Sri Lanka, Ports Authority Acting Chairman Priyath Bandu Wickrama told the Daily Financial Times.

He noted that they were planning on providing more facilities through this measure.

UNP MP Palitha Ranga Bandara's office in Anamaduwa has been burnt by an unknown gang yesterday night. Police said that the office had been totally destroyed and the damage estimated to be over Rs. 1 million.
