DNA leaders remanded till 16th

 It is reported that those who were arrested yesterday (12th) evening in Galle by the police including several leaders of the DNA have been remanded by the Magistrate till the 16th. 11 including General Secretary of the DNA Vijithe Herath MP, Ajith Kumara MP and Member of Southern PC Nalin Hewage were remanded after they were produced before the JMO say police.

EU still hopeful on GSP

 While the GSP+ trade concessions from the European Union to Sri Lanka ends on Sunday, the EU says it is still open for discussions with the Sri Lankan government on renewing the benefits

Speaking to online EU’s Ambassador in Colombo Bernard Savage said that they remained hopeful that Colombo would respond after a deadlock in talks lead to the suspension of the trade concessions. “We have told the Sri Lankan government we are willing to have discussions with them even after the August 15 deadline. The EU is still open for negotiations,” Ambassador Savage said.

A mini war broke out in the Galle town

 A mini war broke out in the Galle town a short while ago as police used teargas and later baton charged a group on DNA members who were staging a protest in the area demanding the release of General Sarath Fonseka.

Democratic National Alliance (DNA) members Anoma Fonseka, Vijitha Herath, Arjuna Ranatunga and several others who participated in the protest were among those hit by teargas. The DNA which commenced their protest in front of the Olcott statue around 3.45 pm in Galle was informed by the police that they couldn’t proceed with the protest.

 The DNF M P Anura Kumara Dissanayake addressing a media briefing yesterday (11) at the Solis Hall, Nawala said, judgment if any, is delivered by the military Court, which is conducting proceedings in an illegal manner against Gen. Fonseka to fulfill the wishes of the Defense Secretary who has already written down the punishment for Fonseka, the people should not accept it. The military Court conducting proceedings against the General without his Lawyer defending him, is deserving of condemnation, and any decision delivered by such a Court should be rejected by one and all. A people’s protest campaign will be launched politically in the event such an action is taken by the Court, Dissanayake added.

Sri Lanka construction industry alarmed over delayed payments

Delays in getting payment especially by a cash-strapped government have created serious difficulties for Sri Lanka's construction industry, senior officials said.
"The biggest problem faced by the construction industry is inadequate working capital," said Priyantha Perera, chairman of the National Construction Association of Sri Lanka.

This was because of "undue and prolonged delays" in payment and approvals of engineers.

It was estimated that there was six billion rupees in outstanding payments for construction projects, Perera told the association's annual general meeting Wednesday.

US wants probe

 A group of US lawmakers are urging the Obama administration to push for an independent international investigation into alleged war crimes that occurred during Sri Lanka's civil war.

In a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the members of Congress called for such a probe saying panels set up by the Sri Lankan government to probe the allegations "lacked the needed credibility."

These panels have "also delayed criminal investigations and in several instances members of these commissions have resigned in protest at the government's interference," the letter said, citing Amnesty International.

Sri Lankan president sacks minister over dengue row

Sri Lanka's president Tuesday sacked a maverick minister who had tied a state official to a tree as punishment for failing to control the spread of dengue fever in the country, an official said. Highways minister Mervyn Silva was dismissed and his ruling party membership suspended pending a disciplinary inquiry, an official at the president's office said.

"The president removed minister Silva from his post with immediate effect," the official said without elaborating.
