Amnesty says emergency rule must end

NEW YORK, 4 August 2010 (IRIN) - The decades-long civil war in Sri Lanka ended more than a year ago, but emergency powers are still in place, sending the wrong message, Amnesty International says.

"With the Sri Lankan military's defeat of the LTTE [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam] as a military force there were high hopes and every reason to expect a loosening of some of the highly restrictive laws and abusive practices that had characterized life in Sri Lanka for the past years," Sam Zarifi, Asia-Pacific director for Amnesty International, told IRIN by email from London. "Unfortunately that has yet to materialize.

Reveal govt.'s response to Mervyn's actions - Karu

 The government should hold an investigation in to the incident of Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva manhandling a Samurdhi officer and reveal the government’s response to the public, Deputy Leader of the UNP, Karu  Jayasuriya says.

Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo today (August 04), he said that this conduct of the deputy minister affronted the entire state sector and that the UNP condemned the action.

 The Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) yesterday cracked a whip imposing a trading halt on some of the most popular stocks traded on the Colombo bourse "until further notice" placing a pall of uncertainty over the Colombo share market.

Trades were imposed on Dankotuwa Porcelain, Blue Diamonds ( voting and non-voting), Environment Resources Investments (ERI) warrants of four maturities and Touchwood with the SEC attributing its action to "unusual increases in the price and the number of transactions of the said securities during the period from July 29 to August 2."

UN panel prepares list

 The Panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to advise him on matters relating to Sri Lanka is compiling a list of Sri Lankan officials who will be approached in order to gather information to compile a report, UN sources said

When asked if detained former Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka is among those likely to be approached, the UN source refused to commit to a response but added that his name ‘may be’ included after the General himself publicly announced that he is prepared to meet the Expert Panel.

Police deployed in Matara town to hunt for students

 The protest campaign held with the participation of thousands of students of University of Ruhuna opposite the Police station at Matara had been peacefully concluded, the police have arrested several students who had been in Matara town says our reporter from Matara. 
 
According to him even at the moment this news item is keyed officers from police riot squad are deployed in the town, searching for students and inconveniencing folk who had come to the town for various necessities. They have arrested youths and several students and our reporter says several of them have been assaulted by the police officers.

Mervyn ties man to tree

 Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva tied a Pradeshya Sabha member to a mango tree a short while ago over his failure to attend a dengue prevention programme in Kelaniya last week.

The official was however later released while two other women were also reprimanded by the Deputy Minister over their failure to attend the same programme.

The Deputy Minister also severely warned one of the lady officers after she raised her strong objections in seeing the male Pradeshya Sabha member being tied to a tree.

Now LK Domain Registry payments online

The LK Domain Registry, which provides Sri Lankan identity on the internet, has facilitated an Online Payment Gateway to make payments to register domain names. This will ease and speed-up the registering process.

With the introduction of this facility with payment through VISA and Master Cards, the registering process can be completed in one day.

Mangala’s party to join UNP

 SLFP (Mahajana Wing) Leader MP Mangala Samaraweera will obtain the UNP membership on August 6 along with his supporters, political sources said yesterday.Mr. Samaraweera defected from the UPFA in 2007 and joined the opposition in parliament.  After that he did politics with the UNP. 

He also contested the April 8 Parliamentary election on the UNP ticket and got elected.  The UNP leadership also requested Mr. Samaraweera to become a member of the UNP.

We were not allowed time to take Legal action against constitutional amendments –Ranil UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing a media briefing at the Sri Kotha on the 1st, said the party was more ready to take political measures rather than legal against the Govt.’s proposed constitutional amendments.

Mr. Wickremesinghe gave this above answer in reply to a question posed by the media whether the UNP is taking legal measures against the constitutional amendments of the Govt. He also added that, as the proposed amendments in writing were received by the party only on Sunday last, there was hardly any time for the party’s legal Council to make an evaluation thereon.
