Palm Beach police in the US turned over six men from Sri Lanka to the U.S. Border Patrol today after noticing them walking down the street in wet pants, police said.

According to spokesman Sgt. Curtis Krauel, a patrol officer noticed the men at 6:40 a.m. (Tuesday) heading south at County Road near Seminole Avenue.

Sri Lanka has not paid for some acquired land for 25-years: official

- Sri Lanka has not paid some owners of land acquired by the state for infrastructure for 25-years, and a total of 8.5 billion rupees remains unpaid for property taken to expand roads, an official said. "To my shock and amazement I found that some people have not been paid for years," Sri Lanka's road secretary Wasantha Karannagoda, a former Navy chief said.

"About 42,000 families who have given up their land for the benefit of the country have not been paid. The oldest is about 25 years."

Singh to send envoy

 India is deputing a senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs to Sri Lanka to assess the progress of restoration of normal life in Tamil-dominated northern and eastern parts of the island at the end of the war against LTTE.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh has conveyed this in a letter to Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi who had recently urged him to send a special envoy to assess the "real situation" in the Tamil areas.

Man ablaze near Sirikotha

 A man identified as Rienzi Algama, set himself ablaze opposite the UNP headquarters Sirikotha today and was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital with serious burn injuries. He was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.

  UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya confirmed that Algama was a UNP supporter and had been ‘disgusted’ over the ‘disunity’ of the UNP and had stressed the need of unity within the party.

'Govt. controlled by international rulers'

July 26, 2010: This government is controlled by companies, American, Indian, international and Israeli rulers, says Dr. Wickremabahu Karunaratne, party leader of the Left Front.

Dr. Karunaratne was addressing a media briefing convened by the Palestine - Sri Lanka Friendship Society in Colombo yesterday on a statement alleged to have been made by the Sri Lankan ambassador to Israel, Air Chief Marshall Donald Perera,  during an interview to a newspaper.

“This proves where our government stands today. There is no need for  doubt. The truth is that this government is purely controlled by Companies, International, American, Indian rulers, and rulers of Israel.

“These actions are designed to achieve their own ends by tricking the Muslim community and the poor community of Sri Lanka and the international community too. Therefore, we must strongly object to this,” said Dr. Karunaratne.

Matara students protest

 Students of the Ruhunu university in Matara staged a ‘sit down’ protest in the Matara town this morning amidst a strong police and army presence, against the death of a university student.

The students had staged the walk towards the Matara bus stand and had attempted to walk towards the Matara police station but were prevented from doing so by riot police and the army.

Student dies of injuries

Susantha Aruna Bandara, a third year student of the Ruhunu University had passed away last night as a result of the injuries he suffered following an assault by the police at the University premises last June, the Inter University Students Federation said.
  According to IUSF Convener Udul Premaratne, the deceased student had suffered severe injuries after being assaulted by the police on June 18 while he was at the university hostel. “The students had gone to the hostel to collect their belongings under the permission of the university administration since the university was closed following a students protest on June 18,” he said.

Sri Lanka to make better use of idle state assets

Sri Lanka will set up a state company to develop joint ventures and lease assets of other failed state companies with a capital of 100 million rupees, without 'privatizing' them, a government minister said. The State Resources Management Corporation will make better use of state assets which are uneconomical, minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said.

Analysts say Sri Lanka's state has lost billions of rupees trying to do business with people's money. Last year just seven state enterprises, including those with monopoly protection, lost more than 50 billion rupees, or around one percent of gross domestic product.

Give democracy! Otherwise be ready to face people's opposition!- Tilvin Silva warns government.

 Unless the country is granted democracy the government should get ready to face people's opposition said the General Secretary of the JVP Tilvin Silva. He said this while addressing a protest campaign organized by DNA in Colombo yesterday evening. 
 
Mr. Silva further said that Rajapaksha regime uses power which was plundered from people to abolish democracy. Although at first President Mahinda Rajapaksha wanted to increase the number of terms for him to attain executive presidency, due to people's opposition he had to reverse the idea. Now he is trying to modify the constitution as he wishes Mr. Tilvin Silva further stated.

We were not allowed time to take Legal action against constitutional amendments –Ranil UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing a media briefing at the Sri Kotha on the 1st, said the party was more ready to take political measures rather than legal against the Govt.’s proposed constitutional amendments.

Mr. Wickremesinghe gave this above answer in reply to a question posed by the media whether the UNP is taking legal measures against the constitutional amendments of the Govt. He also added that, as the proposed amendments in writing were received by the party only on Sunday last, there was hardly any time for the party’s legal Council to make an evaluation thereon.
