GALLE, July 22, 2010 (AFP) - World bowling record holder Muttiah Muralitharan was given a presidential send-off on Thursday after he retired with 800 wickets in the bag. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse flew in from the capital, Colombo, to the southern coastal town of Galle to briefly watch the first Test against India and presented Muralitharan a memento during the lunch break. But Rajapakse had left by the time the off-spinner had last man Pragyan Ojha caught in the slips to achieve the landmark that terminated India's second innings in the post-lunch session of the final day. |

A slender lors (Nycticebus coucang), a very rare species that is in danger of being extinct has been discovered and photographed at Horton Plains in Nuwaraeliya by a group of naturalists in Sri Lanka. It is after 72 years that such an animal has been photographed in Sri Lanka. The leader of the group Saman Gamage said in their research they were able to photograph the loris after observing it for nearly a year. The loris photographed has been named ‘Horton Plains slender loris.’ Mr. Gamage said very important information regarding this small, slow-moving, nocturnal prosimian could be revealed by this research.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says the issue of the advisory panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon should be debated in Parliament. He said this in response to a question posed by journalists in Chennai. According to the Hindu, Mr. Wickramasinghe said the government was taking steps to resolve the ethnic issue in both the northern and eastern provinces. He expressed concern at the plight of the internally displaced Tamils and their rehabilitation. |

The UN expert panel on Sri Lanka held its first meeting, Inner City Press reports. This starts the four month time line for them to produce a report, on the compliance of Sri Lanka’s “Lessons Learnt” panel with international standards for inquiries into war crimes. At 1:30 pm on July 19, panel members Marzuki Darusman, Yasmin Sooka and Steven Ratner met in the UN’s North Lawn building. At that moment, at latest, the four month clock began. |

There will be a wage increase for university lecturers from Rs. 50,000 up to Rs. 200,000 said S. B. Dissanayake, Minister of Higher Education. He said this in response to a question JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake posed at the parliament today. Anura Kumara pointed out that university lecturers are preparing for strikes asking for higher wages and that the government should take action to alleviate this issue. In response to this, S. B. Dissanayake said that there is to be a wage hike from Rs. 27,750 to Rs. 75,000 for junior lecturers and from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 200,000 for senior lecturers. |

Industrious and resourceful, Chandrika De Silva worked hard for 20 years to achieve the American Dream. And she had just begun to relish her life when it was cut short, when she was killed in the driveway of her Los Angeles Reseda home by a Marine suspected of driving drunk. At the crash scene on Monday (July 19), piles of bouquets and dozens of candles surrounded a photo of a smiling De Silva, 51.
